Hello and wekcome, Patricia!

Take yourself back 20 years and tell us if you had any aspirations to become an author at that time. I already was an author, but it was a tumultuous time in the publishing industry, and I lost contracts on five books I/we (wrote alone and with a writing partner) expected to sell.
 

What were you mainly doing as a daily occupation at that time? While waiting for a new contract, I worked as an office temp and landed in a situation where I reorganized an entire office and their bank of computers.
 

And today? How do you mainly spend an average day? I’m always writing, rewriting or revising. But unlike 20 years ago, much of the writing also has to do with publicizing a current book via social networks and blogs.
 

Now jump forward 20 years from today. What do you think you’d like to be doing then? Writing only stories that I love without having to think about what the market demands :)
 

What’s your preferred genre for reading material? Thrillers, urban fantasy, romantic suspense.

What genre/ sub-genre do you feel comfortable writing in? 

All the above. I teach Writing Popular Fiction and Suspense Thriller Writing at Columbia College Chicago, and I encourage students to write cross genres as I do. I have always liked writing that bends the rules at least a little.

What do you think will be the main reading materials within the next decade? Books, some form of portable tablets? I think books will remain with us in some form – a lot of my students still prefer paper, which surprises me. But I think tablets will be old hat in the next decade. Maybe we’ll be plugging ourselves into the ether to “experience” stories. Who knows? A fun thing to think about.

In recent years there’s been a movement towards popular cult-type stories- sometimes driven by what’s been popular on TV and the cinema, like Vampire, shifter, time-shift sub-genres. What do you see as being the ideal focus to capture the imagination in 5 years time? I’m terrible at guessing what will be the next big thing. Genres come and go in waves, and I think that will continue.

Can you give us an idea of what your writing schedules might be like during the remainder of 2013 and on to 2014? A lot of promotion in 2013, both for Written In The Stars and my next book with Entangled, Animal Instincts in November. Also, probably a new writing contract with Harlequin, bringing out a couple of backlist books as indies, and working on some new proposals.

Fast and furious:

Ice cream or chocolate cake? Both. I’m definitely a dessert person.

Home made lemonade or rum cocktails? Rum cocktails as long as there’s pineapple juice involved.

Cycling tour of France or a beach holiday in the Caribbean? Definitely the Caribbean.

A date with a politician, or a date with Gerard Butler? I would take a politician if I could have Gerard Butler? I don’t think so :)

Children or pets? Currently, pets. 

Thank you, Patricia. It's a great honour to inverview a writer who has been in the business for a long time- me being a relative newcomer to having novels published (since Aug 2011). From your answers I'm guessing that the tasks you now have to undertake regarding marketing were not such a requirement 20 plus years ago.

He leaned into her so close his breath laved her face. “How about I make you an honest offer—a partnership.”
She stuck her right hand against his chest and backed off. “I don’t think so. You and I have very different goals.”
“I thought we both wanted to find the motherlode of The Celestine.”
“I’m a marine archeologist and—”
He captured her hand before she could remove it. “And I’m a pirate?”
“I didn’t say that, but you are looking for treasure, while I am looking for artifacts.”
“Not that I see the difference, but how about I offer you this.” From his pocket, he pulled a diamond-studded gold chain from which hung a crescent moon set with sapphires.
Cordelia’s eyes widened.
“Exactly.” He took her right hand from where he’d trapped it and placed the artifact in her palm.
