Da...duh...da...duh... It's Jennifer Martin and that FEAR Anthology!

Da...duh...da...duh....da...duh! Am I scared?

I'm welcoming fellow Crooked{Cat}Publishing author, Jennifer Martin. Doesn't she look sweet?

But...Jennifer is an author of VERY CREEPY STORIES.

She writes horror stories that scares the *wits* out of me, but I'll let you find out about her in this little pre- Halloween/ October interview.

I asked Jennifer some questions and here's what she has to say:

I know you've just had a story published by Crooked{Cat}Publishing. Please give us an idea what it's about.

I have a short story ‘Don’t Break The Glass’ that is in Fear: A Modern Antholgy of Horror and Terror that came out October 3rd, 2012 from Crooked{Cat}Publishing.

I also have another short story soon to be published that is titled ‘The Darkness Cult’, and I am finishing up my novel Certain Madness so that it will be out hopefully early 2013.

I'm quite wimpy so I'm probably too scared to read your work...those nightmare things, and I live in a creaky old house...ENOUGH!

What’s the genre/ subgenre of most of your work?

I write mainly Horror, Urban Fantasy, and Paranormal.  Anything scary, especially with some sort of dripping fangs is what I love to write.

Oh, Fangs....????

Fear anthology available from:

In your story featured in the 'Fear' Anthology who is the hero?

In ‘Don’t Break The Glass’ the hero, without giving too much away, would have to be the little boy named Kevin.  Which is odd to me… I have a nephew named Kevin, and for some reason that name ends up in a lot of my stories.  I tell him it’s because he haunts me, haha.

*Hello, Kevin*  Hope you're going to be nice today.

Do the names for characters just pop into your head as soon as you start a book?

No, I wish they did!  I struggle over the names.  I usually give a junk name to the characters then go back and after a lot of research I will give them their true names.

Confession: I often change names mid-book and even look up names in baby name listings- especially for my historicals.

Authors tend to have favourite bits they like to write, or dislike, writing. What about you?

I think the hardest part is the middle, because you have to start weaving in the subplot(s).  It takes a lot of thought and planning to get that just right while bringing all the parts of the story to an intelligible meeting point.  I always know how the story will start, and I always know where I want it to end up, but the middle part has to so meaty, that it takes much more skill to convey.

Meaty? The images that conjures up.

Do you tend to place your characters in places you’ve been to…or just ones you would like to visit?

I generally write about places I’ve made up.  It seems easier to put buildings and such into place when you can write the setting anyway you’d like.  Otherwise it’s places I’ve been.  That way I can have an excuse to go to new and exciting places.

If you include sensual scenes, do you tend to be explicit, or do you leave it to the reader's imagination?

Personally, when I write sensual scenes I prefer them to be just that-sensual.  I don’t like to go hardcore with the sex or naughty language.  I believe you can tactfully describe a sex scene without being vulgar.  Now I’ll read anything, it doesn’t bother me, but when I write I do it sensuously and a little to the imagination.  BUT, there are different rules to different stories as well.  Some might call for more boldness than others.  I am not opposed to anything-yet.

That open mind sounds like a good thing.
What's your work in progress just now?

Right now I am finishing up Certain Madness.  It is a single book right now, but I am toying with the possibility to make it a series, or at least a trilogy.  On the back burner is a Suspense novel, but I don’t know if I’m ready to switch gears and move out of my comfort zone to a new genre.  I’ll have to see where creation leads me.

My best wishes with that. A change of gears is quite challenging.

Is there a favourite time of year for you?

Fall, namely Halloween!  I love all things that are spooky and scary. Plus when the season changes and the air gets crisp, but not yet cold, it’s the perfect time for me to curl up with a great cup of coffee and my laptop on the back porch and let my fingers fly.

I think I might know the answer but...let's see.
Favourite colour?

Red…who knew?

What would be your favourite snack food?

Coffee…trust me, the way I make it it’s a dessert!

  1. Scary stuff! I can't read horror, never mind watch it. Always hiding behind a cushion even at the slightest hint of suspense. Mind you, I like psychological thrillers and blood doesn't bother me... so there! ;-)

Great interview, ladies. Good luck with your new projects, Jennifer!

    Fangs, eh???
